IN JACO
Al llegar a Jaco, se puede evidenciar que es uno de los destinos de playa más estratégicos geográficamente hablando, ya que se encuentra muy cerca de San José, la capital de Costa Rica. Jaco podría ser caracterizado como una animada ciudad de playa donde, al llegar inmediatamente, se descubre un ambiente de fiesta y actitud relajada.
El viaje de llegada tiene una duración estimada de dos horas. La bienvenida que se percibe es como si se la dieran a uno con los brazos abiertos, y la vida nocturna es bulliciosa, llena de restaurantes y bares eclécticos. Es fácil entender por qué es uno de los destinos preferidos en Costa Rica.
En cuanto al hospedaje, hay una variedad de opciones que van desde hoteles asequibles hasta resorts de lujo o alquileres de vacaciones increíbles, que se adaptan a las necesidades de cualquier viajero.
Desde el principio, se comienza a vivir una experiencia que revela todo lo que se puede disfrutar en este magnífico lugar. Immediately, I began to experience a “ride” that allowed me to see everything I could enjoy in this magnificent place. Here, I could go from nightlife to wildlife and from there to water activities. I experienced a plethora of opportunities for ATV tours, boat and kayak rides, rafting, safaris, horseback riding, deep-sea fishing, and surfing in Jaco.
Surfing is by far one of the most notable activities in the area, as the surf waves can be quite large.
ORIGEN DEL CANTÓN
ORIGIN OF THE CANTON
La fundación de Jaco se remonta alrededor del año 1950, según los residentes locales, aunque existen registros de habitantes nativos huetares que vivían en comunidades dispersas mucho antes de esa época. El cacique principal de la región era Garabito, cuyo nombre se utilizó para nombrar al cantón.
La región fue descubierta en 1522 por el capitán y explorador español Gil González Dávila. En 1980, durante el gobierno de Rodrigo Carazo Odio, se estableció Garabito como cantón mediante la ley No. 6512 del 25 de setiembre.
La infraestructura básica, como el sistema de cañerías, se implementó en 1976, y la carretera Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno (Ruta 34) que conecta el cantón con otras ciudades de la Región Pacífico Central se inauguró en 1978.
La Ruta Nacional 27, más conocida como la Carretera San José – Caldera, ha reducido significativamente el tiempo de viaje entre la capital y el Pacífico Central del país, lo que ha impulsado el turismo y la industria en Costa Rica.
El alumbrado eléctrico se instaló en setiembre de 1981. Jacó, como distrito y cabecera del Cantón de Garabito, alberga alrededor del 68% de la población total, con más de 30,000 habitantes.
Se prevé que Jaco experimente uno de los crecimientos demográficos más rápidos de Costa Rica. La comunidad de Jacó, junto con las vecinas Quebrada Ganado y Herradura, ha experimentado una fuerte migración en los últimos años debido a múltiples proyectos turísticos y el desarrollo de nuevos servicios y comercios.
La ciudad atrae a una población itinerante significativa, especialmente durante las vacaciones, lo que le da un carácter cosmopolita.

Jacó se encuentra a una altitud de 7 metros sobre el nivel del mar, y el clima es normalmente cálido y húmedo, con una humedad relativa en torno al 80%, llegando a 90% en junio.

En el primer día de visita a Jaco, se decidió hacer una relajante caminata por la playa, la cual tiene una extensión de cuatro kilómetros. Al recorrerla, se encontró con una gran cantidad de turistas de todas las nacionalidades, lo que evidencia su popularidad. Se reconoce que es una playa muy limpia y calmada, lo que la hace atractiva para aquellos que buscan un lugar tranquilo para disfrutar del mar y la arena.

Aquí proliferan los clubes y bares populares, donde la vida nocturna se convierte en un mundo de posibilidades al ritmo del hip hop, electrónica y el reggae, si le gustan como a mí, y quiere bailar toda la noche, puede amanecer con una sonrisa en su cara
Si es amante de las cervezas en la playa, hay algunos locales que son especiales para beber cerveza o algún otro tipo de bebida jugando una partida de billar, mientras comparte con lugareños y turistas de todas partes del mundo. Aquí todo es “pura vida”
Beber junto a la playa con música en vivo, buena comida, y preferiblemente, con una buena compañía, seria eso, parte de la experiencia que algunos bares y restaurantes ofrecen frente al mar
Para aquellos osados, y más bohemios de la noche, pueden encontrar hoteles con las más bellas damas donde pueden combinar las máquinas tragamonedas, el poker, la música en vivo, buena comida, y las ¡estupendas! Mujeres.
Sin embargo, a pesar de todo, aquí todo es muy relajado, y los Jacobeños son gentes muy acogedoras.
Debido a esto, Jaco es un excelente destino para el viajero en general, aquí, además, encontré cocina internacional, y una cantidad de cafés, bancos y un sinnúmero de actividades para mantenerse ocupado durante la estancia.

Se encuentra a 107 kilómetros de Jaco aproximadamente. Es quizás uno de los parques más pequeños del país, pero podría considerarse uno de los ejemplos más antiguos de la vida silvestre preservada. Este parque es uno de los más biodiversos del mundo. Se dice que Carara en lengua indígena Huetar significa “Río de lagartos” se encuentra a unos 15 kilómetros al norte de Jacó, el Parque nacional Carara, es reconocido por su fauna exuberante y densa selva tropical.
Carara es el hogar de una de las poblaciones más grandes de lapas rojas que quedan en el país. Es uno de los principales sitios en el país para la observación de aves, cuenta con un sendero de acceso universal, donde el visitante puede vivir la experiencia de estar dentro del bosque, conocer especies y árboles de gran tamaño y ver la relación que existe entre algunas de las especies.

Tiene límites con Punta Mala, también llamada Punta Judas, hasta la desembocadura del río Tullín, que también sirve de límite entre los cantones de Garabito y Parrita. El refugio se encuentra dividido en dos secciones: la parte de Hermosa o Tullín, entre la desembocadura del río y la población de Playa Hermosa, de unos 7 km de longitud, y la sección de Punta Mala, desde Playa Hermosa hasta la punta de este nombre.
Aquí se puede observar la tortuga lora (Lepidochelys olivacea), que desova en sus playas. También y ocasionalmente, desovan tortugas negras (Chelonia mydas) y baula (Dermochelys coriacea).
Dentro del refugio está prohibida la pesca, acampar o encender fuegos, así como sacar especies autóctona

El automóvil es lo más recomendable, si lo hace con la familia. A mi me resulto placentero, además, de posibilitarme la contemplación del paisaje a discreción. El tiempo de viaje aproximado es de 1 hora 30 minutos.
En caso, que se quiera viajar utilizando el autobús, la empresa “transporte Jaco”; es la que brinda ese servicio. Los autobuses se toman en la Terminal 7-10, costado Oeste del Mercado Central 500 metros Norte sobre el bulevar de calle 8.
El horario para comprar los tiquetes es de sábado a lunes de 5:30 a.m. a 7:00 p.m. y de martes a viernes de 6:30 a.m. a 7:00 p.m.
En este caso, el recorrido San José – Jaco tiene un tiempo de viaje de 2 horas treinta minutos. La distancia San José – Jaco, es de 98.2 kilómetros

En Jaco se puede encontrar desde lo más básico como lo son áreas para camping, donde con una tienda de campaña, un saco de dormir y una colchoneta, puede pernoctar en contacto con las palmeras, la playa, y al mismo tiempo escuchar el ir y venir del mar.
Ahora, si prefiere hospedarse en hoteles, los hay de diversas categorias, la mayoría cuentan con exeleñtes amenidades, infraestructura, áreas verdes, piscinas y ambientes muy familiar.
Para aquellos que les gusta probar suerte, algnos cuentan con sus respectivos casinos en el lugar.
Si lo que quieres es estar frente a la playa, no tendrás problema para encontrar los mejores hoteles y villas, la mayoría están muy cuidados, y presentan lindas áreas verdes que contrastan muy bien con el entorno de la playa. Estos hoteles reúnen las condiciones para los diferentes viajeros.
Sin embargo, aquí se encuentra de todo; hostales baratos, donde se comparten los baños, cabinas equipadas para los que les gusta traer alimentos para preparar, casas y apartamentos equipados y muchas otras opciones.
